Scrutiny:
Dolling, 2013, The first name used for this distinctive genus was the vernacular and therefore nomenclaturally unavailable ‘Sténocéphale’ of Latreille, 1825. Latreille, 1829a: 633 published the available Latin form Stenocephalus and this was the name used throughout the nineteenth century. Kirkaldy, 1906: 256 catalogued Berthold’s earlier (1827) Latinisation Stenocephala. Bergroth, 1913e: 12, 1913d: 157-158 noted that Stenocephala had priority over Stenocephalus and adopted it in its stead. Dicranocephalus Hahn, 1826 went unused, despite its claim to priority, even though Westwood, 1840a: 123 had noted that it was synonymous with Stenocephalus. It was not until Stichel, 1935: 357 revived Dicranocephalus in a work on the German fauna that this name began to win acceptance.
